How to Calculate Your Estate Value
Your estate value is the total worth of your assets, less any debts, at the time of death - an important figure for estate planning, probate fees, and understanding what you're actually distributing to beneficiaries.
Important: Superannuation May Not Form Part of Your Estate
Superannuation is generally not automatically included in your estate - it's paid according to a binding or non-binding death benefit nomination directly to your nominated beneficiary, or at the trustee's discretion if no valid nomination exists. This is a commonly misunderstood aspect of Australian estate planning.
What Typically Forms Your Estate
- Property owned solely (not jointly) by you
- Bank accounts and investments in your sole name
- Personal possessions, vehicles, and other assets
- Life insurance, if paid to your estate rather than a nominated beneficiary
Estimates only. Whether super and insurance form part of your estate depends on nominations and ownership structure. Consult a wills and estates solicitor.
